Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) has emerged as a critical discipline in civil, aerospace, and mechanical engineering for real-time assessment of structural integrity. The integration of smart materials particularly piezoelectric transducers, shape memory alloys, and fiber-optic sensors with advanced Finite Element Analysis (FEA) tools has substantially elevated the precision and reliability of SHM systems. This paper presents a comprehensive meta-analytical review of existing literature on FEA-based simulation of smart structures for SHM, with special emphasis on studies conducted using ABAQUS a leading commercial FEA platform. The review systematically synthesizes findings from over three decades of research spanning damage detection algorithms, sensor placement optimization, wave propagation modeling, and multi-physics coupling in smart composite structures. The critical analysis reveals that while significant progress has been made in linear elastic and viscoelastic domains, challenges persist in capturing nonlinear dynamic behavior, environmental variability, and fatigue-induced degradation. |
