CLINICAL EVALUATION OF A STRUCTURED PHYSIOTHERAPY INTERVENTION AT BOMBAY HOSPITAL FOR PATIENTS WITH CERVICAL AND LUMBAR RADICULOPATHY

Abstract: Cervical and lumbar radiculopathy are disabling disorders of the spine, which are nerve root compression that results in radiating pains, sensory loss, and disability. In India, the incidence of radiculopathy is about 12 percent in adults, and more among the occupational and sedentary groups. The purpose of the study was to clinically conduct the efficacy of a structured physiotherapy program of manual therapy, neural mobilization, therapeutic exercise and electrotherapy modalities in Bombay Hospital Institute of Medical Sciences, Mumbai, on patients diagnosed with cervical and lumbar radiculopathy. The outcomes were the modification of pain levels using the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), functional disability (Neck Disability Index (NDI) and Oswestry Disability Index (ODI)) and cervical and lumbar range of movement (ROM) after six weeks of intervention program. A quasi-experimental pre-test post-test was adopted where 60 clinically diagnosed patients were followed (30 cervical, 30 lumbar). Markedly, the hypothesis was that the structured physiotherapy scheme would result in statistically significant pain, disability, and ROM improvement.
