SUSTAINABLE CONCRETE DEVELOPMENT USING FLY ASH: PROSPECTS, CHALLENGES, AND CONSTRUCTION TIME EFFICIENCY

Area: Department of Civil Engineering
Abstract: The increased interest in environmental sustainability at a global level has hastened research and development efforts into supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) which can be utilized as partial or full replacements for Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) in concrete. Fly ash which is a fine particulate SCM that is a by-product of thermal power plants in which coal is burnt for generating electricity has shown a considerable ability towards green construction techniques and is among the most researched SCMs. This review paper provides a synthesis of the existing literature and meta-analytical evidencebases on the potential directions of fly ash use in concrete while exploring its technical potential sand practical challenges that have limited its adoption. The paper provides overview of fly ash classification (Class C and Class F), pozzolanic activity, workability enhancement, long-term strength, permanent durability and reduction of carbon dioxide emissions.
