| Abstract: |
Rock edicts represent one of the most important epigraphic sources for reconstructing the political, cultural, and social history of ancient India. Rajasthan, a region rich in archaeological and historical heritage, contains several significant rock inscriptions that provide valuable insights into the administrative policies, religious beliefs, social structure, and cultural traditions of different historical periods. These inscriptions, engraved on rocks and stone surfaces, function as authentic historical documents that reveal the ideological and cultural frameworks of ancient rulers and societies. The present study explores the cultural and historical significance of major rock edicts found in Rajasthan, highlighting their role in understanding regional history, governance systems, religious developments, and socio-cultural life. Through an analytical and interpretative approach, the research examines the themes reflected in these edicts, including moral teachings, administrative orders, religious tolerance, and social welfare measures. The study also investigates how these inscriptions contributed to the spread of ethical principles and governance practices in ancient society. The findings indicate that rock edicts were not merely political proclamations but also instruments for cultural communication and moral instruction. They reflect the integration of political authority with cultural values and provide significant evidence for understanding the evolution of Indian civilization. The paper concludes that the rock edicts of Rajasthan constitute an invaluable historical resource that contributes to the broader understanding of Indian epigraphic traditions and cultural heritage. |
