ASSESSMENT OF URBAN GARDEN LANDSCAPES AND ENVIRONMENTAL RISK MITIGATION IN INDIA

Area: Department of Management
Abstract: Urban garden landscapes have emerged as crucial nature-based solutions for addressing environmental risks in rapidly urbanizing Indian cities. This study assesses the role of urban gardens in mitigating environmental hazards including air pollution, urban heat islands, and climate vulnerabilities across major Indian metropolitan areas. The research employs a mixed-methods approach combining secondary data analysis from 15 Indian cities, satellite-based assessments, and comprehensive literature review. Data were collected from government monitoring stations, academic databases, and environmental agencies between 2018-2024. Statistical analysis reveals that urban green spaces contribute significantly to PM2.5 reduction (18-35%), temperature amelioration (2-5°C), and carbon sequestration (3.2-8.7 kg CO₂/m²/year). Results demonstrate that cities with higher urban garden coverage (>15% green cover) experience 23% lower heat stress and improved air quality indices. The study identifies critical gaps in urban green infrastructure planning and proposes evidence-based recommendations for policymakers. Findings suggest that strategic expansion of urban gardens can effectively mitigate environmental risks while enhancing ecosystem services and community resilience in Indian cities facing accelerated urbanization pressures.
